February 2019 is snowiest in Lewiston history

Lewiston, Idaho has broken a record set in 1916 for the snowiest February in city history after this month brought 29.5 inches of snow.

LEWISTON, Idaho — Lewiston, Idaho has broken a record set in 1916 for the snowiest February in city history after this month brought 29.5 inches of snow. 

The previous record from 1916 for the snowiest February sat at 27.2 inches. On Wednesday morning, Lewiston saw 5.2 inches of additional snow, increasing the Feb. 2019 total to 29.5 inches. 

Average snowfall for the month of February in Lewiston is only 2.1 inches, which means Lewiston received an extra 27.4 inches of snow this month.   

The Lewiston Police Department is reporting numerous cars sliding off roads on Wednesday and many cannot make it up the steep routes. Police are asking drivers to stay off the roads if they are able. 

Police said a street maintenance crew is working to maintain roads as heavy snowfall continues. 

A handful of roads are also closed in Lewiston on Wednesday, including 5th Street; Gun Club Road; 11th Avenue; Vineyard Avenue; Nez Perce Drive Extension; and 10th Street from 7th Avenue to Miller Street.  

This is in addition to other highway closures throughout the Inland Northwest on Wednesday.

Most of the Inland Northwest has seen February bring an incredible amount of snow. Spokane has seen the third snowiest February on record. With an additional 1.6 inches, the city will see the snowiest February in over a century.
