Cooling resources, free swimming options available August 3 with Spokane heat wave looming

Free evening swimming will be available exclusively on Saturday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — With hot temperatures set to hit the Inland Northwest once again, the City of Spokane will be offering some cooling resources to help you and your loved ones beat the heat.

Cooling Center locations

One of the places you can go to beat the heat are the Spokane Public Library locations, which will be open during regular hours (Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 7p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.).

Here are the different library locations you can go to.

  • Central (906 W. Main St.)
  • Shadle Park (2111 W. Wellesley Ave.)
  • Liberty Park (402 S. Pittsburg St.)
  • Hillyard (4110 N. Cook St.)
  • South Hill Library (3324 S. Perry St.)
  • Indian Trail (4909 W. Barnes Road)

There will be extended hours at Liberty Park (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on Saturday, August 3 and Indian Trail and Central Libraries (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) on Sunday, August 4.

You can also go to the Trent Resource and Assistance Center (TRAC) where you can find fans, meals and other hydration resources. The City of Spokane says they are accepting Gatorade and Powerade donations.

Jewels Helping Hands will have a cooling tent on Friday, August 2, and Saturday, August 3, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the House of Charity location on Pacific Avenue.

STA will be giving people free rides for people going to and from cooling centers.

The Salvation Army will also have vans that can meet where you are and take you to a local shelter. Be sure to call 509.280.6860 or 509.280.6894 for a ride.

Pools, Splash Pads

City of Spokane pools have free swimming sessions Monday-Saturday from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. for all six aquatic centers in the City. 

Here are the six City of Spokane aquatic centers:

  • AM Cannon
  • Comstock
  • Hillyard
  • Liberty
  • Shadle
  • Witter

The City of Spokane said free evening sessions will rotate by day and location. The evening sessions are from 6 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, August 3, there will be an extra free evening swimming session at A.M. Cannon, Comstock and Hillyard pools.

You can also check out splash pads in the area, which are open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. across 19 City of Spokane parks.
