SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane residents aren't the only ones gearing up for holiday travel; the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at the Spokane International Airport (GEG) is also getting ready for an increased number of screenings.
GEG is projecting more than 73,000 travelers will be screened through TSA security over the next week, as people fly to and from their Thanksgiving destination. To make sure travelers get through security quickly and efficiently, TSA shared what foods can and cannot go in a carry-on bag.
A good rule of thumb is if an item is larger than 3.4 ounces, and you can spread it, spill it, pump it or pour it, it needs to go in a checked bag.
Some of the items that need to go in a checked bag include:
- Sauces
- Gravy
- Drinks
- Canned fruits
- Canned vegetables
- Jams
- Soups
- Syrups
There are food items that can be packed in a carry-on, including:
- Baked goods
- Meat (including turkey)
- Stuffing
- Casseroles
- Fresh vegetables
- Fresh fruits
- Chocolates and other candies
This is key information to know if you don't want to lose your grandmother's famous gravy to TSA.
"Unfortunately, when people bring these types of items, even though they're sealed, even though they could be poured out, we don't have staff to pour them out," said Lori Dankers, a TSA spokesperson. "These items go directly in the trash."
If you're still unsure of what items you can bring in your carry-on versus your checked luggage, you can also reach out directly to AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger. You can also reach out on the MyTSA app.
