2 killed after tree falls on truck, eastbound US 2 near Spokane Airport reopened

WSP says a tree fell onto a box truck on Wednesday morning and killed 2 people. All lanes of eastbound US 2 have reopened.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington State Patrol and the Spokane Police Department are investigating a crash that killed 2 people after a tree fell onto the road on US Highway 2 near East Airport Drive and Sunset Frontage Road.

SPD says the collision occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday and callers reported that a tree had fallen and hit a box truck, causing the truck to drive off the road.

WSP and SPD say the driver and the passenger of the truck were killed in the crash.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says both lanes of US 2 have reopened after being fully blocked for several hours while investigators were on the scene. 

SPD says the names of the two people killed will be released at a later time by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office. 

Stericycle, the waste disposal company that owned the truck involved in the crash, released the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened to learn we have lost two Stericycle employees in an accident that took place this morning near Spokane, Washington, when a tree fell on the vehicle they were driving. We are working with authorities to gather information and are grateful to the first responders who arrived on scene. Our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences go out to their families and friends in this difficult time."
