All lanes of SR-206 at Peone Road northwest of Mead are reopen after a truck slammed into the back of a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) vehicle severely injuring one DOT worker.

Sergeant Greg Riddell from Washington State Patrol said a DOT worker was behind his vehicle working on removing two deceased deer when a Ford Ranger hit the DOT vehicle pinning the worker in between the vehicles.

The DOT worker was life-flighted to Sacred Heart with “life-altering” injuries. The driver of the Ford Ranger slammed the windshield and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Sergeant Riddell told KREM 2 that the initial thought is the driver of the Ford Ranger was distracted before hitting the DOT vehicle. Riddell said the driver of the Ranger did not slow the vehicle or move into another lane when approaching the DOT vehicle.

Detectives with the Major Accident team are on scene investigating and closures are expected to last at least through noon.

The roadway was closed for over five hours for WSP to complete their investigation.
