Washington bill proposes $100 fee on new studded tires, a ban in 2025

A new bill proposed in the Legislature would add a $100 fee on new studded tires and ban them altogether in 2025.

SPOKANE, Wash. — New studded tires would carry a $100 fee if purchased after July 1 of this year and be banned after mid-2025 if a Washington bill passes.

House Bill 1309, sponsored by state Reps. Cindy Ryu and Steve Tharinger, would replace the current $5 fee and eventually phase out studded tires. It has been referred to the state Committee on Transportation.

The bill would allow drivers who prefer studded tires to use them until July 2025, but the state would raise the fee for new tires and collect a total of $400 for four new studded tires.

Any seller who refuses to collect the free or any buyers who refuse to pay it are guilty of a misdemeanor, according to the bill.

The state department of transportation recommends alternatives to studded tires for winter driving, especially options that do no cause the same amount of road damage as studded tires. Some of that road damage can lead to potholes.
