Spokane Valley used salt to combat icy roads following Wednesday snowfall

Spokane Valley used granular salt to speed up the de-icing process, while Spokane didn't.

Wednesday's snowfall brought icy roads to much of the Spokane and Spokane Valley areas.

But the Valley used granular salt to speed up the melting process.

The city spread salt granules on top of the snow, said Jeff Kleingartner, spokesperson for the City of Spokane Valley. As cars drove on the roads, their tires crushed the salt further onto the roads.

"This really gets the salt worked into the roads. We then proceeded to plow the major arterials," Kleingartner said.

The City of Spokane did not use granulated salt, according to spokesperson Marlene Feist.

"We use liquid de-icer, which is a magnesium chloride product. We do have a granular product, but we use that in much colder conditions," Feist said.

Magnesium chloride lowers the temperature that water needs to freeze, lessening the chance of ice covering the roads.

Spokane Valley crews also put de-icer on the roads before the snow started to fall.
