SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department (SPD) is conducting traffic emphasis patrols in Latah Valley to make sure people are traveling safely in the area.
SPD said they are in the area to make sure drivers and other motorists are obeying the detour and speed changes in the area as part of the Marshall Road Water Transmission Main Project.
Police say since the start of the project on Tuesday, officers have issued 27 speeding tickets, three cell phone violation citations, one citation for driving with a suspended license and one other traffic-related ticket. SPD said officers have also given eight verbal warnings for speeding and six verbal warnings for other driving violations.
SPD also said speed patrols will continue through the summer under a High Visibility Emphasis, which is funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Officers will be in the Highway 195 area again on Friday and other trouble spots throughout the city.
SPD said from 2014 to 2023, the number of deadly crashes involving speed is going up.
