Spokane drivers alert: Major traffic delays on Monroe Street and Garland Avenue due to paving projects

Roadway closures will remain anywhere from one day to 20 days.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Here is a heads up for Spokane drivers. Construction across the city continues this week and several of the projects will cause traffic delays.

On Monday, crews will pave Monroe Street. If you use Monroe Street between Kiernan Avenue and Francis Avenue, prepare yourself for serious delays.

Crews will have detours in place along with signs that will point drivers in the right direction.

Repaving Monroe Street won’t be the only traffic headache in the area. Crews will fully close both eastbound and westbound traffic at the intersection of Garland Avenue and Monroe Street. That closure is only expected to last Monday.

The Freya Street roundabout and the northbound off-ramp from the North Spokane Corridor will also be closed starting Monday. Crews will remove the asphalt and replace it with concrete to make it more durable.

The closure is expected to last 20 days and detours will be posted.

Communications Manager for WSDOT, Ryan Overton said, “The asphalt was always meant to be temporary. We knew that when it was placed back when the road was opened in 2012. This is just completing what was already done, but it just has reached the end of its life cycle. Now we are going back and instead of redoing it with the asphalt surface, we are doing what was meant to be there originally which is the concrete.”

As a reminder with these projects and any road work, give yourself a bit more time to get to your destination. Leave the house a few minutes early and when driving near construction, slow down and give workers space.
