SPOKANE, Wash. — Thursday's snowstorm was promptly followed by a rainstorm and strong winds throughout the Spokane area, causing the snow on the roadways to melt and create a slushy and slippery commute.
According to a press release from Spokane County Public Works, road crews worked throughout the night to plow, sand, and deice the roads throughout the city.
Spokane County received several inches of fresh snow on Thursday, which kept road crews busy plowing emergency and primary routes of travel.
While out today, Public Works said there is an increased concern for downed trees, branches and powerlines, due in part to the strong wind gusts expected throughout the region.
KREM 2 meteorologists said wind gusts could reach up to 55 miles per hour on Friday.
Spokane County road crews plan to spend the day on Friday clearing the residual snow from the road before it hardens into ice over the next several days, as temperatures are expected to drop. Crews are also planning to work throughout the weekend plowing, sanding and deicing the road.
Drivers should be aware that temperatures are going to drop below freezing overnight on Friday, which will cause icy road conditions throughout the weekend. Road crews are advising drivers to use extreme caution on the roads.
