Snow, slick roads snarl traffic in Spokane Wednesday

Traffic is at a near standstill on I-90 in downtown Spokane because of crashes and icy roads.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Drivers will want to give themselves extra time on Wednesday morning as snow and ice have created slick driving conditions.

Traffic seems to be the worst on westbound I-90 through downtown Spokane.

A crash near Jefferson street left cars disabled on both shoulders. As a result, traffic in the area is down to just one lane, squeezing through the middle.

Traffic cameras from Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center show traffic at a near standstill on I-90 near the Division Street exit. As of 7:15 a.m., the backup stretches past the Hamilton Street exit.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is reporting southbound Highway 395 at the Wandermere Bridge is reopened after a multi-vehicle collision.

Overnight a fire hydrant break closed northbound Division Street at Sprague Avenue in downtown Spokane.

The backups on Wednesday morning follow a day of crashes and slide-offs as several new inches of snow fell in the Spokane area.

Washington State Department of Transportation tweeted, "the snow on the roadway isn't going anywhere. Crews have switched over to primarily sand as temps are too cold & deicing material is no longer effective. Expect snow on the roads and winter driving conditions to continue until we warm up. Drive slow on ice & snow."

This is a developing story. KREM 2 News will update this article as more information becomes available.
