Mullan Road bridge repairs causing lane shift for drivers over I-90

Drivers will have to use the right side of the bridge to travel north while crews are working on the left side.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Drivers on the Mullan Road bridge over I-90 in Spokane Valley will have to shift lanes due to the bridge repairs.

After ongoing repairs on the east side of the Mullan Road Bridge, which include the construction of a new two-inch modified concrete surface to preserve the bridge deck, drivers are expected to experience temporary travel road changes.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), traffic will be redirected to a single lane on the repaved east side of the bridge to allow repairs to begin on the west side of the deck.

This will make traffic control swapped and drivers will have to use the right side of the bridge to travel north while crews are working on the left side.

The project first started in May 2022. The repairs include removing and replacing the deteriorating concrete on the bridge deck, preserving the structure and providing a smoother ride for travelers in the upcoming years. The bridge deck has not received renovations to this extent since it was built in 1975.

Travelers can anticipate varying traffic control on I-90, which will at times be reduced to a single lane during working hours.

Throughout the duration of the project, the bridge will be closed to the public. In addition, drivers who wish to access Argonne Road via the off-ramp from eastbound I-90 are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Eastbound I-90 Argonne Road off-ramp detours:

  • People traveling eastbound on I-90 to access exit 287 and Argonne/Mullan Road will be instructed with signage to use the Broadway Avenue interchange, take Broadway Avenue east then north on Mullan Road.
  • Drivers heading west on I-90 will still be able to use the Argonne Road exit.
  • Active transportation users will be detoured to use the adjacent Argonne Road bridge over I-90 just to the west.

Drivers can find road conditions before heading out the door on the WSDOT Travel Alerts website, mobile app and on the regional Twitter account
