SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — A 6-month-old girl has died after a crash on Highway 395 south of Chewelah. Washington State Patrol (WSP) said a medical examiner confirmed the death with them overnight.
The child was a passenger in one of the two vehicles involved in a crash on Monday morning. The collision occurred on Highway 395 near milepost 200 near the SR 231 intersection south of Chewelah.
WSP reports a Subaru Outback was traveling northbound on Highway 395 when it stopped to make a left turn onto Bakie Road. It was then hit from behind by a Volvo XC70 that troopers say was following too close. The crash closed down the Highway in both directions on Monday but has since reopened.
A family of five was in the Subaru Outback, including the 6-month-old girl. She was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center but later died. The girl was in a car seat. Four other people inside the car were not hurt, including a two-year-old boy and a 6-month-old boy.
The driver of the Volvo was injured and taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.
Washington State Police and WSDOT crews responded to the crash.
A verified GoFundMe has been created to help the family following the tragic loss.
