GENESEE, Idaho — More than 60 vehicles were involved in a pileup on Friday around 2:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 95 south of Genesee.
The Idaho State Police (ISP) says strong winds created hazardous driving conditions with low visibility and caused a series of crashes on southbound US 95.
The Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho Transportation Department worked with ISP to close the highway and conduct crash investigations.
ISP says nine vehicles were determined to have crashed initially, with three additional chain reaction crashes involving three vehicles each. Other vehicles avoided crashing but were left backed up on the road due to the blockage.
ISP says multiple injuries were reported from the various crashes and several off-duty medical personnel in the area worked with Genesee emergency personnel to assess those injured. Three people were taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
ISP says an emergency call was placed to multiple local towing companies to aid with removing the cars from the scene.
ISP says all lanes were clear by 5:45 p.m. on Friday.
