Washington State Patrol: Medical emergency caused crash that blocked westbound I-90 in Spokane Valley

WSP Trooper, 50-year-old Tod Surdam, swerved and hit another car, according to WSP.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — All lanes are back open after a Washington State Patrol (WSP) vehicle was involved in a crash that blocked all westbound lanes of I-90 in Spokane Valley. 

WSP trooper, 50-year-old Tod Surdam, swerved and hit another car due to a medical emergency, according to WSP. 

According to WSP, the trooper's car stopped after hitting the jersey barrier in the median and the other car stopped after hitting the right shoulder barrier. 

Both drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Traffic was backed up for miles after the crash under the Broadway Avenue overpass.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) shut down all westbound lanes of the freeway shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Monday. All lanes have since been reopen.
