IDAHO, USA — 82 people were killed in deadly crashes during the 100 Deadliest Days for Idaho road traffic.

According to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), the 100 Deadliest Days span from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year and represent a spike in fatal or serious injury crashes.

The Idaho Office of Highway Safety (OHS) says that during the summer, risky driving behavior increases when people are out of school or work and on vacation.

ITD says 93 people were killed during 2023's 100 Deadliest Days making it the deadliest year for traffic deaths in over a decade, with a total of 165 deaths.

In 2024 so far, ITD reports that 156 people have died due to crashes.

“While there were fewer crashes than last summer, we still lost 82 people during the 100 Deadliest Days. Every traffic death is a tragedy, and we can do more to prevent them,” said Highway Safety Manager Josephine Middleton. “Whether we are driving for work or fun, we can always drive engaged, always drive sober, and obey speed limits so that we don’t lose more Idahoans to traffic crashes.”

ITD says the top 10 factors that cause fatal crashes are as follows:

  • Failure to maintain lane
  • Speeding
  • Alcohol impairment
  • Inattention
  • Failure to yield
  • Crossing centerline
  • Overcorrecting
  • Following too close
  • Improper turning
  • Drug impairment

A breakdown of deaths in the Northern Idaho district counties is as follows:

District 1

  • Kootenai: 5
  • Bonner: 3
  • Boundary: 2
  • Shoshone: 2
  • Benewah: 0

District 2
