SPOKANE, Wash. – Kids across Spokane County are back in school Tuesday and that means drivers need to be extra cautious.
The speed limit for cars in a school zone is 20 miles an hour, and the city is implementing a “20 is plenty” campaign to promote awareness.
The Spokane Police Traffic Unit will be out in full force today making sure drivers obey those signs. The risk to a pedestrian increase dramatically as speeds increases – even more so if that pedestrian is a child.
A car traveling 20 miles per hour that strikes a pedestrian, gives that pedestrian a five percent chance of being killed. At 30mph, it jumps to 50 percent, and at 40mph, it jumps to 90 percent, according to national statistics.
