'Doing something good': Volunteers helped clean up Spokane on Earth Day

More than 30 Edward Jones volunteers cleaned up Spokane on Earth Day. They gathered more than 25 trash bags of waste.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The sun came out right on schedule, for more than 30 Edward Jones volunteers to clean up Spokane on Earth Day.

"This was a good way for all of us to come together and kind of socializing. But also, you know, do something good for the environment, too," Eric Conway, who organized the event, said.

This is the first year the group organized its Earth Day clean-up. They set up by mile 14 on the Centennial Trail, a stretch of the trail the company sponsors.

"This is the first time we're doing this one. So we're always looking for ways that we as a firm can give back to the community. And that's why we had the t-shirts made up for everyone," Stacie Duenich, a regional leader for Edward Jones, said.

Duenich said the company loves giving back to the community. They also hold multiple other charity events throughout the year.

She said they want to keep it beautiful.

"And I think we all have a responsibility to do our part to you know, if everybody does a little bit, it's not that hard," Duenich said.

Volunteers used rakes and their own muscles to clean up all the debris left over the winter.

"I kind of like just getting out and getting some sunshine," Steve Wilkins, a volunteer, said. "I guess it beats sitting inside. But the weather's starting to get nice. And it's just nice to make things that are going to be coming up green here pretty soon."

Volunteer Lisa Regehr was pleased by the turnout. She enjoys seeing her coworkers in different space.

"Makes me really happy. It's nice to get out of the office do something good and you know, get fresh air for a change and not be stuck inside where it's raining or doing regular work," Regehr said.

Organizers say they hope to bring back the event again next year. By the end, they were able to collect more than 25 trash bags of waste.
