Whitworth football had no issues with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, handling CMS 48-6 en route to the Pirates first NCAA Division III football playoff victory in 12 years.
The Pirates are 10-0 and will now face St. John's in next week's second round. The location and time of the game will be announced on Sunday.
CMS scored on their first drive but Whitworth held them to zero points after that.
The Pirates went into half up 20-6 after a 58-yard touchdown pass from Leif Ericksen to Nick McGill with 12 seconds to play.
In the third, Whitworth capitalized on a BJ Mullin interception and on the very next play Ericksen found Garrett McKay in the endzone to make it 27-6.
After that the route was on, as Whitworth's final two touchdowns came with their backup QB Connor Johnson under center.
Cody McDonald scored a career-long 47-yard field goal in the game as well.
Whitworth had 513 yards of offense compared to CMS's 288.
Whitworth advances to the second round of the NCAA DIII playoffs for just the second time in school history.
