SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Velocity is off to a great start in the franchise's inaugural season. The Velocity sits in second place in the USL League One table thanks in large part to the tactics and team building of their first manager.
"You do not get an opportunity as a head coach to build from the ground up. That does not come around often," Velocity head coach Leigh Veidman said.
Veidman became the Velocity's first head coach in November and began the process of putting together his team.
"It takes a lot of different pieces to be successful, it's not just about going out there on the pitch and getting the tactics right; it is about recruitment, having the right resources, having the right people involved, having the right vision. All of those things are very important to bringing success to an organization and USL Spokane had all of those things," Veidman said.
The Velocity has played well so far this season, which Veidman contributes to the performance of his players.
"Their togetherness and fight have been big eye openers for such a new group. It usually takes a long time to put something like that together and train that essentially, but that was part of our recruitment process as well. We wanted to make sure we got those experienced guys in who had experienced this type of environment before," Veidman said.
Now, the Velocity hopes to continue the early season success and contend for a USL League One title.
"The guys are putting together great performances, they have made the games entertaining. The front office has been brilliant in getting ONE Spokane Stadium full and that is where we are together at this club. It's not just about putting the product together on the field, it's about putting a product on the field that you can sell tickets to in the front office and it's about all of us making sure that this comes together. I think so far we are in a good place. It is a fun project to be involved with, that's for sure," Veidman said.
