SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Velocity FC will host Central Valley Fuego FC for the opening match of the inaugural USL Jägermeister Cup.
After returning from a three-game road trip, the Velocity will take to the pitch at ONE Spokane Stadium on Saturday, April 27 at 3 p.m. This match marks the beginning of the USL Jägermeister Cup's group stage.
Head coach Leigh Veidman shared his excitement for the tournament's format, emphasizing its encouragement of aggressive play and its potential to deliver fun games for fans. With Velocity currently sitting in second place in USL League One, boasting a 3-2-1 record, the team is looking to keep the ball rolling.
Central Valley Fuego FC arrives with a 1-4 record, eager to get back on track after suffering three consecutive defeats against USL League One opponents. With both teams placed in the West Region alongside Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC and Union Omaha, regional rivalries are set to ignite in the West.
The USL Jägermeister Cup operates on a point system, rewarding three points for match winners. Each region's winners and the top-scoring non-group winner will advance to the knockout rounds. Notably, tied matches will proceed directly to penalty shootouts.
USL League One President Lee O'Neill highlighted the significance of the cup in enhancing fan engagement and fostering rivalries within the league. Drawing inspiration from similar cup competitions worldwide, the USL aims to create a compelling experience for players and fans alike.
Tickets are still available for Saturday's matchup.
After facing Fuego, the Velocity will continue group p lay by hosting Union Omaha on May 11.
