SPOKANE, Wash. – Local wheelchair racers are getting some expert training before the race on Sunday.
Susannah Scaroni is a professional Paralympic athlete born in Tekoa, Wash. She will be seeking her third wheelchair racing title for the 40th Bloomsday on Sunday. It is her 12th race.
Before she goes to try and win another race, she took time to help younger racers in Spokane who will be racing in Bloomsday.
“It's additionally amazing to be here as an adult and professional racer to show these kids an example of what's in store,” Scaroni said.
The kids she worked with are ecstatic about getting such strong tips.
“It's like fun, it's fun, racing with people,” 7-year old Bloomsday wheelchair athlete Aden Youngblood.
Youngblood said it is fun to do Bloomsday because he can race with all of his other friends.
Scaroni said this year will have a smaller field because other racers are training for the Olympics in Rio.
One of the tips she gave the younger racers was to gain speed going down hills. She said that there are enough hills that they can carry their speed for the majority of the course.
