Coeur d'Alene's 40th triathlon is hosting several hundred athletes in City Park on August 10.
The athletes will compete in one of three racing distances. There will also be different waves of groups for men and women.
The Olympic Wave Start Schedule is:
- 7 a.m. 1st wave -- Men aged 25-49
- 7:05 a.m. 2nd wave -- Women aged 14-49
- 7:10 a.m. 3rd wave -- Men aged 14-24 and 50-99
- 7:15 a.m. 4th wave -- Women aged 50-99, Athena, Clydesdale, and all Olympic Relay Teams
Each participant is responsible for knowing the race course. There will be volunteers and markings, but knowing the route beforehand will help you a lot later on.
The triathlon will start at 7 a.m. with the first event being a 1.5K swim in Lake Coeur d'Alene. The next event will be a 40K bike ride that follows along the North Idaho Centennial Trail, then up Yellowstone Trail. To finish everything off, the athletes will compete in a 10K run to the finish line.
- There will be a pre-race informational meeting at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 9, at the city park band shell.
- All wave starts for the swim portion will have different colored swim caps. Swimmers should be prepared five minutes prior to the start.
The "Sprint Distance Triathlon" has a 500-meter swim, a 13-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run.
- The Scenic Sprint was added to the Coeur d'Alene Triathlon in 2013. It is half the distance of its Olympic distance predecessor and less than a quarter of the distance of an Ironman endurance race.
- They have "designed this event to have women and men-specific wave starts to provide the novice triathlete the confidence and safety desired for an enjoyable event," according to the Coeur d'Alene Triathlon.
The duathlon will include a 5K run, a 40K bike ride and a 10K run to the finish line.
- All athletes are strongly advised to attend a pre-race information meeting tonight, Friday, August 9, at 6 p.m. at the city park band shell.
- A course map is available of the Cd'A Triathlon website -- no paper maps will be provided during the races.
