SPOKANE, Wash. — We don't know the reason why Gonzaga isn't retiring Adam Morrison's jersey when they hang it up in the McCarthey Athletic Center on Feb. 27.
I'm not here to speculate why, but I do know his jersey should be retired.
We are talking about arguably the greatest Gonzaga basketball player of all time.
The way he took over games, the style and the relevance he brought to the Gonzaga program. He had it all. Honoring him is definitely cool, but I'd like to see that number three retired for these reasons.
The Zags have hung up only two other jerseys for basketball, which belonged to John Stockton and Frank Burgess. Both of their numbers are retired.
That is why this whole thing to me is weird. If the standard for jersey retirement is set by those before him, then here we go.
He's the only one to be named an Associated Press first team All-American between him, Stockton and Burgess.
Morrison is the only player in Gonzaga history to be named player of the year or co-player of the year by any organization or publication.
He led the nation in scoring in 2006, becoming the second Zag to ever do so. He did that in his final season where he just took over games.
While at Gonzaga, he made the West Coast Conference All-Freshman team and the first team in the two years after.
The point is: Adam Morrison is a Gonzaga icon.
When I think of Gonzaga men's basketball, Morrison and Stockton's names are the first two that come to mind.
As I said, I don't know the reason why his jersey isn't being retired. But there is no question in my mind that it should be.
