Vandals hire Dan Jackson as new defensive coordinator

Jackson comes to Moscow from Vanderbilt and replaces Rob Aurich, who departed for San Diego State this offseason.

MOSCOW, Idaho — Former Vanderbilt defensive backs coach Dan Jackson has been named the new defensive coordinator at the University of Idaho under head coach Jason Eck.

Jackson replaces Rob Aurich, who departed this offseason to join new head coach Sean Lewis's staff at San Diego State.

Jackson coached a Vanderbilt secondary which produced six interceptions his first season in 2022 and then doubled that number to 12 picks in 2023.

Previously, Jackson coached for two seasons at Northern Illinois and eight years at South Dakota State, where he was on staff with Coach Eck.

"I am truly honored to step into the role of defensive coordinator for the University of Idaho and join Coach Eck's staff," Jackson said in a news release.

"Dan is an elite person and football coach. He played a big part in South Dakota State's ascension to the top program in the country and went on to add two years of SEC experience. We are very excited to welcome Dan and his wife Missy to Moscow," Eck said in a news release.

Jackson is already on campus in Moscow and has begun working with a new look Vandals defense which has lost several players to the transfer portal including starting cornerbacks Marcus Harris and Ormanie Arnold and young linebacker Xe'ree Alexander.
