PULLMAN, Wash. — The Washington State Cougars have returned to the AP top 25 checking in at No. 22 in this week's poll following a 29-26 victory over San Diego State on Saturday night.
The Cougs are 7-1 on the season and their only loss came on the road at No. 15 Boise State.
This marks the first time the Cougs have been ranked this season and the first time since week seven of last season.
WSU was ranked as high as No. 13 last season before a midseason collapse which led to a 5-7 record.
Now, the Cougs enter their second bye week of the season with just one blemish on their record and a matchup with (2-6) Utah State looming at Gesa Field on November 9.
WSU is averaging 38 points per game this season led by redshirt sophomore quarterback John Mateer, who orchestrated a 12 point fourth quarter comeback last night in San Diego. Mateer ranks fifth in the nation in total offense.
The Cougar defense is also tied for sixth in the nation in takeaways with 15.
WSU will finish the season with home games against Utah State and Wyoming and two more road tests at New Mexico and Oregon State. None of WSU's remaining opponents have a record over .500.
