PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State is coming off of a big performance on offense against Utah State on Saturday, but they have what could be a tough test against a dangerous, but inconsistent New Mexico squad.
Head coach Jake Dickert said Monday that the Lobos often show up in unique schemes that allow explosive offensive plays.
New Mexico has to win out in order to keep the hope of bowl eligibility alive, and every win helps the Cougs in their chase for the College Football Playoff.
“You can tell, the way they play, they’re hungry," Dickert said. "They’re playing hard. That was different than maybe some of the other teams we’ve played in those types of positions. These guys, they want to do something. Going to a bowl game after not being very successful the last four years is a huge step in what they’re trying to build down there. Obviously, us coming in, a ranked football team, we’re going to get their best, and our best will be required, there’s no doubt about it."
Dickert seemed most concerned about the New Mexico offense, which has looked very good at times this season.
"Their quarterback is a problem. He has more scrimmage yards than John (Mateer). This scheme of offense can make you look bad really quick. They make you get your guys down there, and all of a sudden, boom. I think they had four plays over sixty yards against Wyoming. So, you’ve got to be fit, you’ve got to play with energy, and you’ve got to take advantage of some of your matchups on offense," Dickert said.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday at Gesa Field. You can catch the game on Fox Sports 1.
