SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are in agreement on a trade which would send starting pitcher Robbie Ray to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for outfielder Mitch Haniger and starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani. The Giants will also send $3 million to Seattle.
The Mariners inked Ray to a five year, $115 million contract in 2021 following a season where he led the American League in ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched and WHIP en route to his first AL Cy Young award.
Ray went 12-12 with the Mariners in 2022 and gave up a walk off three run home run to Yordan Alvarez in game one of the ALDS against the Astros.
This season Ray pitched in just one game before it was announced he would need Tommy John surgery.
Haniger played with the Mariners from 2017-2019 and again from 2021-2022. He has battled injuries his entire career and played in just 61 games last season.
In his final full season in Seattle in 2021, Haniger hit 39 home runs and drove in 100 runs, but over the last two seasons, injuries have held him to just 17 home runs and 62 RBI.
DeSclafani was 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA in 18 starts for the Giants last season. He missed the second half of the season due to a flexor strain in his right elbow.
Ray has an opt out in his contract after this season.
Haniger has two years and $29 million left on the deal he signed with the Giants last offseason.
DeSclafani is in the final year of a three year deal and he will make $12 million this season.
