PULLMAN, Wash. — The No. 1 seed Washington State women's basketball team won 66-46 at home against the No. 8 seed Lamar Cardinals in the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT).
The Cougars came out of the gate quick ending the first quarter 21-8, with Eleonora Villa leading Wazzu 8 points, 1 assist and 1 steal. The Cardinals struggled, NJ Weems scored 50% of the teams points in the first quarter with 4 points.
The Cardinals tripled their score from the first half but couldn't edge out the Cougs ending the half 34-24. During the first half, WSU shot 48% from the field and perfect from the free throw line. LU also shot perfectly from the free throw line but struggled a little more from the field only making 36.7% of their shoots.
In the second half the Cougs remained strong, never letting the Cardinals pull ahead. Wazzu started hitting major shots beyond the arc and pulled away late in the fourth quarter.
The Coug's leading scorer was Tara Wallack with 15 points, 2 assists and 1 steal, trailing Wallack was Villa with 12 points of her own, with 5 assists, and 1 steal.
The Cardinal's leading scorer was Jacei Denley with 12 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds, behind Denley was Akasha Davis with 10 points she also had 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
Lamar came into the WBIT as a 8 seed with a record of 24-6 and 17-1 in conference play. The Cardinals were #1 in the Southland Conference.
