PAC-12 conference parts ways with commissioner George Kliavkoff

Kliavkoff has been the conference commissioner since July of 2021

SPOKANE, Wash. — Following the collapse of the PAC-12 conference, the conference and commissioner George Kliavkoff are parting ways effective on February 29th.

Kliavkoff has led the conference since July of 2021 and oversaw the departures of 10 of the 12 member schools this past year to other conferences.

Prior to becoming commissioner, Kliavkoff had no college administration experience, as he previously worked for MGM Resorts International, Hearst Communications and MLB advanced media.

It was a brief, rocky tenure for Kliavkoff as the head of the conference. As other conferences, such as the Big Ten and Big 12, signed lucrative media rights deals, the PAC-12 was unable to develop anything concrete.

Due to the conference's inability to acquire a media rights deal, powerhouses USC and UCLA made the decision to leave the conference and join the Big Ten midway through 2022.

The University of Colorado followed by bolting for the Big 12 and was later joined by Utah, Arizona, and Arizona State.

Soon after, Oregon and Washington announced they, too, were headed to the Big Ten before California, and Stanford made their way to the ACC, leaving just Oregon State and Washington State to fend for themselves in the PAC-12.

"The PAC-12 Board of Directors announced today that the Conference and George Kliavkoff have mutually agreed to part ways, effective February 29, 2024. More details about new leadership of the PAC-12 will be announced next week," the conference said in a press release today.

At Kliavkoff's departure, the PAC-12 still has no media rights deal and Washington State and Oregon State have entered into scheduling agreements with the Mountain West Conference for football and the West Coast Conference for other sports except baseball.
