Coaching opportunities arise as Spokane preps for launch of middle school football

This year there will be two new teams that will serve as a feeder program for North Central and another two teams that will feed into Rogers High School.

SPOKANE, Wash. — With the start of the new school year less than a month away, preparations to welcome students back have begun in the Spokane School District.

Students in SPS will have access to more team sports in the coming year, including tackle football in middle schools. More than 100 students have already registered, and much of the equipment is ready to go. However, the district now needs more coaches to help out.

There is an active posting on the SPS website with the application if you’re interested in becoming a coach and leading these young students in the right direction.

This year there will be two new teams that will serve as a feeder program for North Central and another two teams that will feed into Rogers High School.

Next year SPS hopes to expand with feeder programs to all five local high schools. For now, it’s an opportunity to grow and it’s something high school coaches in the area are looking forward to.

They also help with the recruitment process for new coaches. North Central Football coach Aaron Woods said, “We want to make sure we have guys that want to be here. They understand that it’s not just about them but it’s about the kids. There’s always life lessons. One of those avenues that they can use through football but apply to life.”

Each middle school team will have three to four coaches on staff.

Earlier this month SPS held its first-ever coaching clinic to prepare staff across the district for a new school year. Some of the topics discussed were leadership, medical and mental performance.
