SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga Prep's head football coach Dave McKenna has announced that he will be stepping down after 16 seasons.
According to a statement from the high school, McKenna broke the news to his players in a team meeting in the Chapel of Three Companions on Wednesday. McKenna leaves Gonzaga Prep as the winningest active coach in the GSL, leading the team to a 4A title in 2015.
On top of that, McKenna's teams amassed a record of 136-37, 8 GSL titles and multiple appearances at state. He's also been named GSL coach of the year six times and Washington state high school coach of the year in 2015.
"In the end, it's all about relationships—players, colleagues, parents." McKenna said. "I’ve been blessed to be part of this community."
While his time as head football coach for Gonzaga Prep has come to an end, McKenna will continue to serve the school as dean of students and as a coach for the varsity golf team.
Officials with Gonzaga Prep said the search for a new football coach will begin in the next few weeks.
