Zags' Yvonne Ejim shines bright, earns spot on USBWA National Player of the Year Watch List

Ejim is one of 40 standout women named on the Watch List, including Caitlin Clark and Aaliyah Edwards.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Zag star forward, Yvonne Ejim has been named to the 2024 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award and All-America Watch List. 

Gonzaga women’s basketball’s Ejim is one of 40 standout women’s college basketball players for the National Player of the Year watch list. This list includes Caitlin Clark, Aaliyah Edwards and Aneesah Morrow. 

During the 2023-2024 season, Ejim has averaged 20 points and 8 rebounds per game. Her 487 points scored this year ranks sixth in the nation. Ejim has also scored double figures for 30-straight games and has scored at least 20 points in 14 games this season.

In the 2023-24 season, so far, this will be the third player of the year watch lists’ that Ejim is named on. Earlier this season, she was named as a semi-finalist for the 2024 Becky Hammon Player of the Year Award. She was a finalist in that award last season. 

The Becky Hammon Player of the Year award will name the five finalists in early March, then the winner will be announced around the time of the NCAA March Madness Tournament’s Final Four. 

Ejim was also named to the Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year Midseason Team. 

The 10 semifinalists for the Naismith award will be named on Mar. 14.

Along with the many watch lists Ejim is named on, the Zag was also recruited by the Canada Women's Senior Team.

About the Award 

According to their website, The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is given to the women's national player of the year by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

This award was named for the UCLA guard and was first presented in the 1987-88 season. It was formally named in Meyers Drysdale's honor in the 2011-12 season. 

Ann Meyers Drysdale played at UCLA from 1974-78. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999.

According to the USBWA website, "The primary goal of the USBWA has remained constant since its inception: to serve the interests of journalists who cover college basketball."
