SPOKANE, Wash. — The offseason of change for the Gonzaga women's basketball program received a boost today as UConn transfer guard Ines Bettencourt committed to GU.
Bettencourt was never able to crack the star studded rotation at UConn in her two seasons in Storrs. She only shot 25 percent from the field in limited minutes last season.
The Sao Miguel, Portugal native comes to Spokane with two years of learning under Geno Auriemma under her belt and two years of eligibility remaining.
As of now, Bettencourt will join Claire O'Connor and Esther Little as the only guards on this year's Gonzaga roster.
Bree Salenbien is still mulling her basketball future after yet another torn ACL.
Bettencourt was the second youngest player on the Portugal U-20 team at the 2023 European Championship and ranked second on the team averaging 9.7 points and 3.3 assists per game.
She scored a career high 7 points on January 5, 2023 against Providence.
Bettencourt is the first commit to Gonzaga this offseason as the Zags look to replace seven departing players from this season's Sweet Sixteen team.
