Gonzaga Women's Basketball Head Coach Lisa Fortier announces she's fighting breast cancer

In a video posted by Gonzaga Women's Basketball, Fortier was diagnosed in February. She will be coaching the team this season.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga University Women's Basketball team posted a video on Tuesday, announcing that head coach Lisa Fortier has breast cancer.

In the video, she revealed she was diagnosed with Stage 2 or 3 breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes at the beginning of February.

"As soon as our season was over, we kind of went full-go mode on how to take care of me," Fortier said in the video.

She went on to say that she had a successful surgery in April. Over the summer, Fortier took a step back from the team to focus on her health and processing the life-changing diagnosis.

"My big takeaway so far is to just not take it for granted. Whatever my situation is to enjoy each day that I get top show up to a place where I am happy to be there and happy to be around the people that I'm around," she said.

Fortier says she will be returning to coach the GU Women's Basketball team this season.

"We're really excited for our season to come, and we just wanted to share that bit with you. So, looking forward to seeing you guys out there. And thank you for all your continued support," Fortier said at the end of her message.
