Former Gonzaga Bulldog Chet Holmgren named NBA Rookie of the Year finalist

San Antiono Spurs' Victor Wembanyama and Charlotte Hornets' Brandon Miller were also named.

SPOKANE, Wash. — While a date hasn't been set for the announcement of NBA Rookie of the Year, we do know the finalists: Chet Holmgren, Victor Wembanyama and Brandon Miller.

Holmgren is a former Gonzaga Bulldog who was drafted into the NBA by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2022 but didn't get to play in his would-be rookie season due to suffering an injury in the off-season.

The 7'1" OKC center averages 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. He leads the team in rebounds and blocks.

During his rookie season, Holmgren helped lead the Thunder to clinching their first NBA Playoff berth since 2020 and securing the top seed in the Western Conference.

Holmgren was the highest-ranked recruit to ever sign with the Zags. He spent one season in Spokane (2021-22) before declaring for the NBA Draft. Holmgren was drafted 2nd overall, behind Paolo Banchero, who later won 2023 Rookie of the Year.

During his time with the Zags, Holmgren started in every game, except for Senior Night against Santa Clara. He averaged 14.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.

Victor Wembanyama

In the 2023 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama first overall. He is a 7'4" center from France who averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game for the Spurs.

Brandon Miller

The Charlotte Hornets selected Brandon Miller second overall during the 2023 NBA Draft. Miller is a 6'7'' forward that went to the University of Alabama. He averaged 17.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game for the Hornets.
