ESPN is reporting that former Washington State quarterback Ryan Leaf has been hired as a college football analyst.

The network says he will be teamed up with play-by-play announcer Clay Mayock to commentate games on ESPN2 and ESPNU.

Leaf has broadcasting experience working for the Pac-12 Network last season and co-hosting a show on SiriusXM's Pac-12 channel.

The former No. 2 pick in the 1998 NFL Draft has had a roller coaster of a career battling drug addiction and serving time in prison.

Leaf was one of the most hyped quarterbacks while playing at Washington State.

He finished third in in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1997 and led the Cougars to the Rose Bowl. He was named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year.

He spent four years in the NFL, considered by many as one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

After his career as a pro, he spent two years in prison after being arrested in 2012 for breaking into a home in Montana to steal prescription drugs and violating his Texas probation.
