CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington University has decided to postpone football's Red & White game and canceled spring sports amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Practices and workouts in all sports have been suspended indefinitely. The suspension will be re-evaluated by the school and the Big Sky Conference before April 3.
The Red-White Spring Game, scheduled for April 24, will be re-scheduled if possible. Spring football practice was supposed to begin on April 1, but will be suspended.
Eastern's Pro Day and the 48th annual Pelluer Track and Field Meet will be canceled.
Spring sports competition was previously suspended by the Big Sky Conference on March 12.
The NCAA had previously announced the cancellation of all spring sports championships, as well as the remaining NCAA Championships for winter sports, including basketball.
"The safety of our students, staff, and fans is the No. 1 priority right now," EWU Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey said in the statement. "We are cooperating fully with the recommendations and directives of our university administration and other agencies. We are terribly disappointed for our programs and student-athletes to have to take such drastic actions. But until the outbreak is under control, it's our duty and responsibility to suspend all activities that may even have a remote chance to spread the disease."
