SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Indians debuted their King Carl jerseys in April. The brand new uniforms pay tribute to civil rights icon Carl Maxey.
Maxey was a former boxing champion, civil rights trailblazer and was the first Black man to graduate from Gonzaga Law School and practice law in Spokane.
The original idea for the jerseys began with the late Sandy Williams who founded the Carl Maxey Center and the Black Lens newspaper.
In addition to the jerseys being one-of-a-kind, they also will raise money for a great cause. Spokane Indians Senior Vice President, Otto Klein said, “Overall what we’re trying to do is raise money for the Carl Maxey Center. A portion of the proceeds from all the things, all the merchandise that we sell will go back to the Sandy Williams fund for the Carl Maxey Center.” In addition, $1 from each ticket sold from the group ticket offer will be donated to the Sandy Williams Fund for the Carl Maxey Center.
The uniforms include a jersey designed with a boxing glove and crown with a hat that represents Maxey.
The team will wear the King Carl Jerseys twice this season, once during a game in April 6:35 game and the next opportunity to see them will be on Juneteenth.
The Indians are taking on the Everett AquaSox in a three-game series.
