Witnesses describe Spokane Valley explosion

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash.-- Firefightersknocked down atwo-alarm business firein Spokane Valley after an explosion sent glass, smoke and flames into the air Monday morning.

An oral surgeon at the Valley Mission Professional office building told KREM 2 News that his nurse was in the office just before 7 a.m. this morning when she noticed light smoke. She warned the other businesses in the building about the smoke just before an explosion blew out the first floor windows. No one was hurt.

Heavy smoke could be seen pouring out of the building for the next 45 minutes as firefighters worked on the fire.

The oral surgeon told KREM 2 News that he went inside to survey the damage and said there was 'nothing left' in his office.

The buildingis located at Mission and Houk directly across the street from the emergency room at Valley Hospital and Medical Center.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, but firefighters said they believe the fire started in the oral surgeon's office.

Bill Clifford of the Spokane Valley Fire Department said if the explosion had happened later in the day when patients were in the office there would have been fatalities.

Missionwill beclosed from Pines to Vercler until about 11 a.m. while firefighters work in the area.

Investigators are expected to remain on the scene throughout the day.
