SPOKANE, Wash.-- A longtime Spokane dentist is facing federal drug charges. Authorities believe James Shelby wrote hundreds of illegal prescriptions over the course of three years.
Authorities said Shelby wrote prescriptions for hyrdrocodone and tramadol. Court papers note that more than 17,000 pills were distributed since 2014.
"We are disappointed in the decision of the United States Attorney's office to pursue criminal charges against Dr. Shelby," said Shelby's lawyer on Wednesday. "As a well-respected local dentist, Dr. Shelby has served our community for over 30 years."
Shelby's lawyer is asking for these charges to be resolved through the dental licensing board. There is no word yet as to when Shelby will be in court.
