Previewing impacts of Spokane Public Schools bond and levy in upcoming election

It will be the first time in six years that a bond and levy for SPS are included in the same election cycle. The bond represents $200 million for SPS.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane is less than one week away from the special election on February 13. The election will include a new levy and bond for Spokane Public Schools.

It will be the first time in six years that both a bond and levy for SPS are included in the same election cycle. The bond on the ballot represents $200 million for Spokane Public Schools.

If passed, the district says those funds will replace Adams and Madison Elementary Schools. Those two schools have the oldest buildings in the district.

SPS says there is also a plan to modernize both North Central High School and Garry Middle School.

Along with those projects, the district also has plans for upgrades to Chase Middle School.

SPS Superintendent Adam Swinyard said, “And that’s what these bond improvement projects are about. It’s not about expanding the experience; it’s about maintaining what the community comes to expect in their public schools.”

For context, KREM 2 reached out to the district to identify the pass/fail rate when these bonds and levies are on the ballot. Over the last 26 years, voters have passed each bond and levy that has appeared during an election cycle.

The bonds are used for major projects while the levies help fund district programs and operations.

The election will take place on February 13. Day of registration and voting in person ends at 8 p.m.
