BOISE, Idaho — In court on Monday, the state called a handful of witnesses to the stand to testify in Chad Daybell's murder trial, including a former Fremont County detective who oversaw communications within the county jail at the time of Daybell's investigation.
Detective Vincent Kaaiakamanu said in his testimony that on June 9, 2020, as police searched Daybell's property for the remains of Lori Vallow's children, JJ Vallow and Tylee Ryan, the couple held an intimate phone conversation, in which Daybell said to Vallow, "they're searching...we'll see what transpires," and tells her to pray.
The three-minute recorded phone call occurred when Vallow was in jail (awaiting her very own trial for the same charges Daybell now faces) and Daybell had just been detained by Rexburg police as dozens of law enforcement officers narrowed in on his property -- where they would eventually find the remains of JJ and Tylee.

The prosecution allowed a recording of the entire phone call to be played for the jury and entered into evidence.
Lori Vallow Daybell was sentenced to life in prison in July 2023 for killing JJ and Tylee and conspiring to kill Tammy Daybell.
