POST FALLS, Idaho -- Shasta Groene, the sole survivor of one of North Idaho's most high-profile murder cases, hosted a fundraiser for local animal shelters in Post Falls.
Groene is now 15 years old. She said she wanted to use the attention she gets to do some good.
The high school junior donated her time to help family friends who organized the event.
Groene was eight years old when convicted serial killer Joseph Duncan brutally killed her two brothers, her mother, and her mother's boyfriend. Duncan also kidnapped Groene, but she was discovered at a restaurant in Coeur d'Alene after seven weeks of captivity.
Groene said she still thinks about what happened to her every day, but she does not want it to define her. She said she is not ashamed to tell her story in hopes she can help others.
