CHENEY -- It's close, just not close enough.
Eastern Washington University's Red Turf Project is nearly complete, but the Sprinturf installation crew needs a few more days to finish the project and, as a result, Eastern's football scrimmage on Wednesday (Aug. 25) will take place on the EWU Sports and Recreation Center practice fields as originally scheduled.
The scrimmage will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. as Eastern continues its preparations for its season opener Sept. 2 at Nevada. After taking Thursday off, Eastern is planning to practice on the red turf for the first time on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m..
The project is still a week ahead of schedule, with the projected completion date originally listed as Sept. 3. The inaugural game on the red turf takes place Sept. 18 versus Montana, scheduled to start at 4:05 p.m. Pacific time. A dedication and open house is being planned for Thursday, Sept. 16 starting at 3:15 p.m.
The project began on June 14 with the start of excavation work. At the open house, the field will be officially be re-named Roos Field in appreciation of the $500,000 pledge made by Michael and Katherine Roos toward the project.
