SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Mayor-elect Lisa Brown announced plans to appoint two people to positions in her cabinet once she is sworn in.
The announcement comes just two days after Brown announced her plan to join neighborhood, businesses and local leaders together to identify the most pressing concerns in the city before she takes office.
“I am grateful for the willingness of these public servants to serve in these roles as my administration takes shape,” Brown said. “Their experience and commitment to our city will be invaluable as we create a better way for Spokane.”
Brown announced Thursday she plans to appoint Mike Piccolo as the city attorney. Piccolo is the current assistant city attorney. He has more than 30 years of legal experience, including working for both David Condon and Nadine Woodward's administrations.
Brown plans to keep Garrett Jones as the interim city administrator. In addition to his current role, he has been a longtime public servant in Spokane. He has served as the director of the city of Spokane Parks and Recreation Department since 2019.
In addition to appointments, Brown said she plans to elevate the position of director of the Office of Civil Rights, Equity and Inclusion to a cabinet position. She said she plans for current Director Jerrall Haynes to stay in that role. Haynes previously served as the president of the Spokane Public Schools Board of Directors and is a U.S. Air Force veteran.
“The work of the Office of Civil Rights, Equity, and Inclusion is integral to all the work being done at the city,” Brown said. “For that reason, it is important to immediately elevate the director to a Cabinet-level position.”
Brown will become the next mayor of Spokane on Jan. 1, 2024. She said these appointments are the first of several that will be announced in the next few weeks.
