Committee Chair, Carmela Conroy, announced she was stepping down at the January 24 meeting.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane County Democrats Central Committee chair (SCDCC) Carmela Conroy announced she is stepping down from her role to focus on her run for Congress, where she plans to challenge Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

SCDCC Vice Chair Stephen Kirby stepped up to acting chair in Conroy's absence.

"{I'm} holding Cathy McMorris Rodgers accountable for putting party over country; profits over people; and her personal religious beliefs over her duty to defend our Constitution and it guaranteed separation of church and state,” Conroy said.

According to her website, Conroy previously worked in the federal government on international issues before taking on the role as the Spokane Democrats Central Committee chair. McMorris Rodgers represented Spokane as a member of the Washington House of Representatives, since 1994.

The SCDCC said they will meet to elect a new chair on Feb. 22.
