SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Voters in Spokane County will get to decide to renew a sales tax set to appear on the upcoming November ballot.
The Board of Commissioners' proposal would fund the juvenile detention center.
The proposed tax is 1/10th of a percent. The funds collected would be used to operate, maintain and repair the juvenile detention center.
If the measure is approved by a majority of voters, the renewal would start on January 1, 2026 and would extend through December 31, 2035.
“The Board recognizes the importance of our juvenile justice system, from supporting youth making positive changes, to providing accountability that protects community safety,” said Mary Kuney, Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. Kuney continued, “This proposal is a renewal of an existing tax, something that has been approved by the voters five times previously and passed most recently in 2015 with nearly 70% voter approval.”
This is a different tax than the one proposed by Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown. The funds generated from that one would be used to enhance community safety.
Spokane City Council still needs to approve it.
