SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane City Council is looking to fill a vacancy in District Two.
Betsy Wilkerson's recent victory in the race for city council president has left her seat, Position Two in District Two, vacant. The council plans to fill that vacancy has early as January 2024.
The person appointed to this position must have lived in District Two since at least Jan. 22, 2023. Whoever is appointed will serve until November 2025, when the next election for that position has been certified by the Spokane County Elections Office following the general election on Nov. 2, 2025.
Below is the timeline for appointing a replacement:
- Dec. 8: Application opens on the city's website; the city council offices, located on the seventh floor of City Hall; and at the MySpokane service desk, located on the first floor of City Hall.
- Jan. 5, 2024: Applications due to the City Clerk's office no later than 5 p.m.
- Jan. 18, 2024: City council plans to conduct interviews during a publicly-noticed meeting. Said meeting will be open to the public. The council might hold an executive session to evaluate potential appointees' qualifications.
- Jan. 22, 2024: Council plans to vote in open session to fill the vacancy.
