SPOKANE, Wash. — Initial results from Tuesday's primary election show incumbent Mayor Nadine Woodward and former Commerce Secretary Lisa Brown advancing to the general election in November.
Both Woodward and Brown secured a majority of the votes out of the five candidates running to be Spokane's mayor. Brown pulled in 2,000 more votes than Woodward in the first release of votes. Additional ballots will be counted in the following days.
KREM 2 received statements from both candidates about the votes they received.
"It is clear that voters are not buying the lies and misinformation coming from Lisa Brown and want a mayor with a record of results and someone who will focus on safer communities and accountability in our homeless response. Spokane voters sent a clear message that they support the Spokane Police Department, reject Lisa Brown’s needless tax-hikes, and are tired of Lisa and the City Council pushing for soft-on-crime policies," Woodward's team said.
“The truth is we don’t blame the mayor for homelessness,” Brown said. "We blame her for spending millions of dollars on a warehouse without running water and calling it a shelter. We don’t blame the mayor for rising crime. We blame her for a citywide police response rate of 42% and a shortage of 70 uniformed officers. Spokane deserves leadership that gets results.”
The Secretary of State will certify the results of the primary election on August 15, 2023.
